EU Banking Dispute Evidence Log

The initial complaint, the bank's response or missed deadline, the statements, the timeline and the remedy — in one structured log a FIN-NET ombudsman can't wave away.

EU banking rights run on deadlines and a complete paper trail

Hidden fees, an unjustified freeze on your funds, an unauthorised transaction, a SEPA transfer gone wrong — EU law gives you real remedies for all of them, and a free escalation path through FIN-NET to your national financial ombudsman. But every one of those routes runs on the same thing: proof that you complained, proof of what the bank did (or failed to do within its statutory deadline), and a dated record of the money in dispute.

The internal complaint has a hard clock — for payment-service disputes under PSD2 the bank owes a final written response within 15 business days. Miss the evidence for that clock, or lose the statements that show the disputed item, and an otherwise valid case stalls before it reaches an ombudsman.

Step by step

  1. Download the PDF log and the Excel version the moment a dispute starts.
  2. Record the initial complaint you sent — the date, the channel, and the exact wording (e.g. titled "Formal Complaint under the Payment Services Directive").
  3. Log the bank's response and its date — or, if the 15 business-day PSD2 deadline passed with no final response, record that the deadline was missed.
  4. Attach the account statements showing the disputed charge, freeze, or transaction, with references.
  5. Keep a dated communications timeline of every call, email and letter, then record the specific remedy you're requesting — and hand the completed log to the bank, FIN-NET, or your national supervisor.

Anyone disputing a bank inside the EU/EEA

Fees, frozen funds, unauthorised transactions, or a failed SEPA transfer — a single dated evidence trail is what turns a complaint into a FIN-NET case your national ombudsman can actually act on.
