Fraudulent and unauthorized charges on credit card statements are routinely missed because most people do exactly what they are expected to do — recognize the charges they remember, assume the rest are legitimate, and move on.

Duplicate charges for the same transaction, subscription fees from services that should have been cancelled, amounts that are slightly higher than the agreed price, and charges from unfamiliar merchant names that are actually legitimate companies billing under a different trading name — all of these go undetected until the pattern has repeated for months.

Chargeback rights in both the UK and US have time limits. In the US, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the statement date. Waiting is expensive.

How it works

Step by step

1. Download the Excel file and open the Statement tab.
2. Enter every transaction from your current statement — date, merchant name, amount, and category.
3. Mark each transaction as Recognized, Not Recognized, or Unsure.
4. Flag anything suspicious with a reason — Duplicate, Unauthorized, Wrong Amount, Unknown Merchant, or Forgotten Subscription.
5. The Flagged Items tab automatically pulls every flagged transaction with a calculated dispute deadline based on the transaction date.
6. Use the Summary tab to see your total spend by category and your complete action list.
