The $800 duty-free exemption is gone

As of 2026, the $800 "de minimis" exemption that used to let low-value international purchases enter the US duty-free has been suspended for shipments from EVERY country — first for China and Hong Kong (May 2025), then for all other countries (August 2025), with the suspension continued indefinitely by CBP in June 2026. This means nearly every international online purchase, regardless of price, can now be subject to duties — including small, cheap items that used to ship duty-free. Congress has also scheduled the exemption's full legal elimination for July 2027, so this isn't expected to be reversed.

Actual duty rates vary enormously by the product's origin and category — as a rough guide, shipments from China/Hong Kong have faced notably higher rates than shipments from most other countries in 2026, but Kibbo can't calculate your exact rate for you. Check the marketplace/seller's checkout page (many now disclose an estimated duty at checkout) or your national customs authority for the number that applies to your specific item.
