Lost Luggage Inventory Template
Everything that was inside the bag, itemised — item, brand, value, purchase date, receipt availability, and an automatic total declared value, to back up a Montreal Convention baggage claim.
"What was even in the bag?" is the question that sinks a baggage claim
Under the Montreal Convention — the international treaty that governs airline liability for checked baggage worldwide, not a rule specific to any one country or region — an airline that loses or damages your bag owes you the value of what was inside it, up to a set liability limit. But "owes you" only becomes "pays you" if you can actually list, and reasonably evidence, what was in there.
Trying to reconstruct that list from memory weeks into a claim is how genuinely valid items get dropped or undervalued. Building the inventory while it's still fresh — ideally before you even file the claim — is what turns a vague description into a number an airline's claims department can't easily talk down.
Step by step
- Download the PDF pack and the Excel version as soon as you realise the bag is lost or damaged.
- List every item: what it was, the brand, its value, and roughly when you bought it.
- Note whether you still have a receipt or other proof of purchase for each item.
- Add any notes that support the item's condition or value (photos, gift receipts, warranty cards).
- Let the automatic total give you the declared value to submit with your claim.
Anyone filing a lost or damaged baggage claim
Whether the bag never arrived or turned up damaged, the inventory is what lets you back up a Montreal Convention claim with a specific, itemised value instead of a rough guess.
