"30g of protein per scoop" can mean 30g of real whey — or 20g of whey and 10g of cheap amino acids that inflate the lab test without building any muscle. The technique is called protein spiking, and it exploits a genuine gap in how protein is measured.
How the standard protein test actually works
Protein content on a supplement label is typically calculated using the Kjeldahl (or similar Dumas) method, which doesn't measure protein directly — it measures total nitrogen in the sample and multiplies it by a standard conversion factor (commonly 6.25) to estimate protein content. This works well under normal conditions, since protein is usually the dominant source of nitrogen in a food sample.
Why this creates an opening for manipulation
The problem: several cheap compounds also contain nitrogen without being useful protein, including free-form amino acids like glycine and taurine, and other non-protein nitrogen (NPN) sources like creatine. Add enough of these to a formula, and the Kjeldahl test reads the same total nitrogen — and therefore the same "protein" figure — as if that nitrogen had come entirely from real whey. - Be more skeptical of unusually cheap protein powders relative to the wider market, since spiking is primarily a cost-cutting technique.
- Favor products independently certified by NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport, both of which verify label accuracy on tested batches.
