The Digital Subscription You Can't Cancel: What EU Consumers Should Do

The subscription button was everywhere when you signed up. Now the cancellation option has mysteriously disappeared. First determine whether you are exercising a withdrawal right, ending a contract under its terms, or relying on a specific national or EU remedy.

"Cancel Anytime" and the Legal Right of Withdrawal Are Different

A consumer may have several different ways to end a digital subscription, and they are not interchangeable. A contractual cancellation right may operate throughout the subscription, while the EU right of withdrawal is generally a limited distance-contract right, subject to exceptions.

That distinction matters because a missing cancellation button does not automatically prove a legal violation — but a trader can still be in difficulty if it obstructs a right that the consumer actually has.

A New EU Withdrawal Function Applies From June 19, 2026

Directive (EU) 2023/2673 amended the Consumer Rights Directive to require an easily accessible withdrawal function for distance contracts concluded through an online interface where the consumer has a right of withdrawal. Member States were required to apply the implementing measures from 19 June 2026.

The function must be easy to find and continuously available during the withdrawal period, and the trader must send an acknowledgement of receipt on a durable medium. This is specifically about exercising the right of withdrawal; it should not be described as a universal EU "one-click cancellation" rule for every subscription after the withdrawal period has expired.

If the Service Is Defective or Not Supplied, Different Rights Can Apply

For digital content and digital services covered by Directive (EU) 2019/770, consumers can have remedies for failure to supply or lack of conformity, including repair, price reduction or termination in specified circumstances.

These are different legal grounds from simply deciding that you no longer want the subscription.

Build a Cancellation Record

Escalating a Failed Cancellation

Start by sending a clear written cancellation or withdrawal statement that identifies the contract. Keep the evidence of delivery and ask for confirmation.

If the trader does not resolve the problem, use the trader's complaint procedure and then the appropriate national consumer or alternative dispute-resolution route. For cross-border disputes within the EU, the European Consumer Centres Network can provide assistance.

The former EU Online Dispute Resolution platform should not be presented as a current route: the ODR platform was discontinued as part of the EU's replacement of that system.
